Gerhard P. Hochschild was born in Berlin Germany on April 29, 1915. Soon after Hitler came to power in 1933, Hochschild was sent to South Africa from Germany where he continuted his education. Hochschild enrolled in the University of Capetown where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1936 and a Master of Science degree in mathematics in 1937.
